Afghan artists based in Germany are organizing art exhibitions across Europe to amplify the voices of Afghan girls and women, reacting to the imposed restrictions on their freedoms.
A group of Afghan female painters and artists residing in Germany are hosting various exhibitions and galleries in Europe to raise global awareness about the plight faced by disadvantaged Afghan women and girls in response to the new restrictions imposed on them.
Lina Akrami, one of the featured artists, recalls the summer of 2021 as a turning point, a period during which she was forced to burn her artwork and flee her homeland. She has been living in Germany since 2022 and has started her artistic journey from scratch.
In her efforts, Akrami has held several exhibitions in cities like Kiel, Weisbaden, and Berlin, aiming to portray the pressures and hardships faced by Afghan women through her art. She expresses, “I want to showcase the situation of my fellow women through my art.”
Statistics reveal that since 2021, approximately 2.6 million girls in Afghanistan have been deprived of continuing their education beyond sixth grade. Moreover, the UN Women organization has reported that 78% of Afghan women and girls are barred from education and work.
Akrami has voiced her concerns about the normalization of this crisis in the international community, calling for practical and effective actions to support Afghan girls and women, stressing, “We must not let the suffering of Afghan girls and women be forgotten.”
