The US Drug Enforcement Administration (SIGAR) said the value of narcotics production in the country last year was between $ 1.8 billion and $ 2.7 billion.

Citing the latest report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the agency wrote in a tweet that the value of Afghanistan’s GDP in 2021 was equivalent to 9 to 14 percent of the country’s GDP.

SIGAR have said that opium production in 2021 will reach 6,800 tons, an increase of eight percent compared to the 2020 figures.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said in a report in the last quarter of 2021 that the area under poppy cultivation had fallen by 21 percent last year.

In the past, part of the Taliban’s income was said to come from the production, trade or trafficking of narcotics.
