The United Nations Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Rabab Fatima, emphasized the importance of journalists’ safety and called for immediate attention to their protection.
Fatima, who also serves as the head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), stressed the need to ensure the safety of journalists. Her remarks coincided with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
Fatima highlighted that free media activities play a crucial role in advancing national dialogue, establishing sustainable peace, and institutionalizing good governance. She called for serious attention to the security and operational immunity of journalists at both national and international levels.
This message from UNAMA’s new chief comes amid reports from press freedom organizations indicating that journalists in Afghanistan have faced numerous challenges since the events of August 2021. Increasing censorship, unlawful detentions, and economic hardships are among the ongoing issues affecting the media landscape.
The lack of judicial accountability for acts of violence against journalists has forced many media workers to leave the country. This situation has posed serious challenges to free reporting, with threats against journalists on the rise.
