Amid heightened security tensions between Kabul and Islamabad, a new confrontation has taken place along the Durand Line. The incident occurred on Friday, October 3, in the Golestan area, with both parties presenting contradictory assertions about the origins of the conflict and the extent of the casualties.

According to security sources in Pakistan, its forces repelled an armed attack from Afghan territory, claiming that several Taliban fighters were killed in the skirmish. Conversely, the Taliban’s Ministry of Defense refuted this assertion, stating that its troops responded to repeated gunfire from Pakistan and targeted a military base near the Spin Boldak district in Kandahar province.

Aerial Bombardments and Their Impact

This clash occurs as Pakistan continues its aerial assaults on various regions of Afghanistan. Pakistani officials reported that on Thursday, fighter jets bombed ten positions within Afghanistan, alleging these bases were being used to launch drone attacks against Pakistan.

In response to these bombings, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban government, emphasized that four civilians had died in Kandahar, Paktia, and Khost provinces and noted that retaliation would be executed at an appropriate time. Civil society organizations and UNAMA have confirmed the civilian casualties resulting from these airstrikes.

Fragile Relations Between Kabul and Islamabad

The relationship between Kabul and Islamabad has soured significantly, particularly following a recent attack on a police station in the Kohat region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which resulted in numerous fatalities. While Pakistan claims that the Taliban harbors its opponents, Kabul consistently denies these assertions and attributes the roots of its security challenges to internal issues faced by Pakistan.
