Tensions Flare Again Along the Durand Line Amid Conflicting Claims

A new clash has erupted along the Durand Line between Afghan and Pakistani border forces, with both sides presenting conflicting claims regarding casualties and the initiation of the conflict.

The recent tensions between Kabul and Islamabad have escalated with a new confrontation along the Durand Line. This incident occurred on Friday, October 3, in the Golestan area, where both parties have offered contradictory statements about the cause of the clash and the number of casualties involved.

According to sources from Pakistan’s security forces, they repelled an armed attack from Afghanistan, claiming that several Taliban fighters were killed in the exchange. Conversely, the Taliban’s Ministry of Defense has denied these claims, asserting that their forces responded to repeated fire from Pakistan and targeted a military base near the Spin Boldak district in Kandahar province.

Aerial Strikes and Their Impact

This clash comes at a time when Pakistan continues its airstrikes on various regions in Afghanistan. Pakistani officials reported that on Thursday, their fighter jets bombed ten positions in Afghan territory, which they alleged were being used to launch drone attacks against Pakistan.

In response to these bombings, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government spokesperson, emphasized that four civilians were killed in Kandahar, Paktia, and Khost provinces, stating that a timely response to these attacks would be forthcoming. Civil society organizations and UNAMA confirmed the civilian casualties resulting from these bombings.

Fragile Kabul-Islamabad Relations

The relationship between Kabul and Islamabad has faced severe strains, especially following a recent attack on a police station in the Kohat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which resulted in numerous fatalities. While Pakistan claims that the Taliban harbors their adversaries, Kabul consistently denies these allegations, attributing the roots of security challenges to internal issues within Pakistan.
