The Narcotics Control Agency of Tajikistan has reported that, contrary to the Taliban’s assertions of reduced drug trafficking from Afghanistan, there is no evidence to support a decline.
The agency has revealed that its recent investigations have uncovered the initiation of narcotic production within clandestine laboratories across Afghanistan. These illegal drugs are reportedly being smuggled into Tajikistan before being distributed to other nations.
Recent seizures underscore the growing concern, with over 2.5 tons of narcotics confiscated along the Tajik-Afghan border in 2023 alone. This figure represents more than half of the total narcotics seized in Tajikistan last year, highlighting a significant uptick in drug trafficking activities.
Despite the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan and the subsequent decree issued by their leader, Molahbatullah Akhundzadeh, banning production and trafficking of narcotics, the reality on the ground appears to contradict these proclamations. The Tajik government has also noted a lack of communication regarding any anti-narcotic efforts purportedly conducted by the Taliban, further raising questions about the effectiveness and sincerity of the Taliban’s anti-drug policies.
