Philip Croft, the spokesperson for the World Food Program (WFP) in Afghanistan, has reported that approximately 15.8 million individuals in Afghanistan, predominantly women and children, are currently experiencing hunger.
According to Croft, among those affected, 3.5 million are confronting emergency levels of food insecurity, indicating a dire situation that requires immediate attention.
The spokesperson further highlighted the nutritional challenges faced by the vulnerable segments of the population, noting that last year, around one million pregnant and lactating women in Afghanistan were affected by malnutrition. Additionally, the WFP’s findings revealed that at least two million children under the age of five suffered from acute and moderate malnutrition during the same period.
Croft also brought attention to the critical issue of funding shortages, which he said would result in approximately 1.4 million women and children being unable to receive necessary aid in 2023. This shortfall underscores the urgent need for increased support and resources to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
