Robert Wood, the U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, has called for the establishment of an international contact group aimed at intensifying pressure on the Taliban.
Wood urged member states of the Security Council to collaborate in exerting pressure on the Taliban to alter its current policies.
The Deputy Ambassador emphasized the need for a contact group and the appointment of a special envoy from the United Nations to ensure that Afghanistan adheres to its international commitments.
This proposal comes amidst Washington’s criticism of the deteriorating hunger and economic situation in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s ascent to power. Concurrently, the U.S. has frozen Afghanistan’s foreign currency reserves and imposed economic and banking sanctions on the country.
