Human Rights Watch has issued a statement urging an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity by foreign soldiers in Afghanistan.
The organization also highlighted ongoing violations of women and girls’ rights by the Taliban, in contravention of the Doha Agreement, as the 22nd anniversary of the September 11th attacks approaches.
The statement noted that the situation escalated in August, a time when many diplomats worldwide are on summer vacations. It recalled that during the same period the previous year, the Taliban had imposed bans on Afghan women and girls pursuing higher education and working in aid organizations.
In reference to the 54th meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Human Rights Watch called on attendees to establish a new accountability mechanism for gathering evidence related to all international crimes committed in Afghanistan, particularly those against women.
The Human Rights Watch also emphasized the need for the International Criminal Court to investigate crimes against humanity by various groups in Afghanistan, including foreign soldiers.
