UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the ban on educating Afghan girls violated the equal rights of women and girls to education and jeopardized the future of the country, given the enormous role of Afghan girls and women in society.

He called on the Taliban to open schools to all students without delay.

The UN Secretary-General has lamented the Taliban’s decision to continue banning girls’ education.

Girls ‘schools were scheduled to reopen across Afghanistan after months of closure. Still, the Taliban Ministry of Education announced that girls’ secondary and high schools would remain closed until further notice.

A statement from the Taliban Ministry of Education said that if the school uniform is designed following Afghan law, customs, and culture, they will reopen girls’ schools following the Taliban leadership verdict.
