Turkmenistan announced it will begin transferring natural gas to Afghanistan via the TAPI project in 2026. This initiative aims to bolster economic cooperation in the region and strengthen economic ties.
According to released information, Turkmenistan has confirmed that the transfer of natural gas to Afghanistan through the TAPI pipeline will commence in 2026. The head of the state-owned company Turkmen gas, Mukhsit Babayev, shared details of the project at an international oil and gas conference in Ashgabat, highlighting that construction from the border at Serhetabat to Herat province is progressing on schedule.
This project is designed to export Turkmen natural gas to Pakistan and India, with a projected capacity of up to 33 billion cubic meters of gas annually. Babayev also stated that the TAPI project will enhance economic cooperation and promote regional relations.
Mohammad Nazim Samoon, Head of the TAPI project coordination office in the Taliban Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, mentioned that the experiences gained from this project demonstrate the necessary capabilities for advancing work in various sectors. He added that significant experience has been acquired over the last two years in establishing routes, land acquisition, and addressing security challenges.
Efforts to advance the TAPI project continue despite ongoing challenges in Afghanistan-Pakistan relations. Key border crossings between the two countries have been closed since October 2025 due to conflicts, negatively affecting bilateral trade. In this context, the first stage of gas transfer to Herat province does not signify the completion of the entire project, as ensuring access for Pakistan and India to this energy source will require further progress on their territories.
