Sergey Shoigu, the Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, expressed hope during a meeting with Amir Khan Muttaqi that other countries will recognize the Taliban government, indicating that bilateral relations between Moscow and Kabul are progressing.
In his recent meeting with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban government, Sergey Shoigu conveyed his desire for other nations to follow Russia’s lead in recognizing the Taliban regime. He emphasized the importance of bilateral relations in security, political, and economic realms, stating that Russia’s recognition of Kabul has laid the groundwork for further cooperation.
Shoigu also noted that many countries in the region are currently engaging directly with the present government in Afghanistan. His comments follow earlier statements made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who indicated that there are no barriers or sanctions hindering the strengthening of relations between the two nations.
After the Moscow format meeting, the Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement highlighting the significance of integrating Afghanistan into the global economic system and enhancing bilateral ties. Notably, Russia was the first country to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan in July 2023, following a Supreme Court decision to remove the Taliban from the list of prohibited groups.
Russian officials cited the aim of facilitating economic, trade, energy, and transit cooperation between the two countries. Russia’s recognition of the Taliban could also positively influence Afghanistan’s relations with other regional countries.
