Pakistan’s Ambassador: Afghanistan’s SCO Membership Threatened by Taliban Rule

Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia, Faisal Neaz Termizi, stated that Afghanistan cannot achieve full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) due to the current Taliban situation. He highlighted the concerns among member countries regarding this issue.

In an interview with a Russian media outlet, Faisal Neaz Termizi, Pakistan’s Ambassador in Moscow, clarified that Afghanistan is currently unable to attain full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He referenced the existing Taliban government and expressed hope for Afghanistan’s future membership in the organization, while acknowledging that the current circumstances prevent this from happening.

Termizi further emphasized that there are serious concerns among SCO member countries regarding the Taliban regime. He pointed out that the security structure and the world view of this government do not align with the shared perspectives of other member nations.

The ambassador added, “We will only be inclined to support Afghanistan’s full membership if a government is established that respects the rights of minorities, women, and ethnic groups.”

He also addressed the developments that have turned Afghanistan into a haven for extremists, claiming that certain regional countries and foreign forces are contributing to instability in Pakistan and its neighboring countries.

Termizi underscored that Pakistan is seeking a stable Afghanistan that considers the interests of the region rather than a country that exacerbates instability for its neighbors. He also announced that Pakistan will participate in the “Moscow Format” meeting on Afghanistan scheduled for October.
