Local authorities in Herat have announced a remarkable uptick in commercial exchanges between the Taliban and Kazakhstan, stating that the trade volume between the two nations has soared to $581 million over the past six months.

Governor of Herat Meets Kazakh Delegation

This topic was discussed during a session where Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the governor of Herat, met with the Kazakh delegation led by Yerkin Tokumov, Kazakhstan’s special envoy for Afghanistan. Tokumov emphasized the importance of enhancing transit capacities and eliminating customs barriers.

Kazakhstan Invites Afghanistan to Joint Economic Meeting

The Kazakh special envoy also extended an invitation to Afghan officials to participate in an upcoming economic meeting scheduled to take place in Kazakhstan. In response, the governor of Herat highlighted the region’s historical significance and security situation, considering it an attractive location for investment and expanding regional trade.

Previous Agreements on Economic Cooperation

Back in June of this year, representatives from both countries reached agreements concerning the export of agricultural products from Afghanistan in exchange for wheat imports from Kazakhstan, as well as cooperation on the construction of the Torghundi-Herat railway. Trade relations between the two countries are rapidly advancing.

Development of an Economic Cooperation Roadmap

These advancements are occurring as efforts to develop a “roadmap for bilateral economic cooperation” are underway, with Kabul and Astana aiming to increase annual trade volume to $3 billion.
