China reaffirmed its commitment to support Afghanistan in international forums during a meeting with Afghan officials. The Deputy Prime Minister called for China’s backing in the United Nations Security Council.
In a farewell meeting, Abdul Salam Hanifi, the Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan’s interim government, emphasized the importance of China’s support for Afghanistan in international organizations during his discussion with Zhao Xing, the Chinese ambassador to Kabul. Hanifi urged the Chinese envoy to robustly advocate for Afghanistan’s position in the United Nations Security Council.
Zhao Xing, whose three-year mission in Afghanistan is coming to an end, described the relationship between Kabul and Beijing as longstanding and historic. He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of Afghan officials during his tenure and noted the significant improvement in economic exchanges between the two nations recently.
The Chinese ambassador highlighted that his country will continue to support Afghanistan in global institutions, noting an increase in people-to-people exchanges between the countries. These remarks come as Hanifi expressed optimism for the future development of relations between the two nations.
The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized the necessity of China’s support in global meetings and acknowledged the country’s important role on both regional and global stages. After the return of the Islamic Emirate in August 2021, China was among the countries that maintained its diplomatic ties with Kabul.
Although Beijing has not officially recognized the current Afghan government, it was the first nation to improve its relations by appointing Zhao Xing as its new ambassador in Kabul in September 2023.
