Afghanistan-Uzbekistan Trade Surpasses $2 Billion in 2026

In the first eight months of 2026, trade exchanges between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan exceeded two billion dollars, marking significant progress in the economic relationship between the two countries.

Trade Volume Reaches Two Billion Dollars

According to the Uzbekistan Exporters Union, trade between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan has risen to over two billion dollars in the first eight months of 2026. This is notable, considering the trade volume stood at around 800 million dollars in 2024 and increased to 1.85 billion dollars in 2025.

Emphasis on Economic Relationship Development

Representatives from the union emphasized the need to enhance trade relations during a meeting with business activists in Balkh province. The Balkh Chamber of Commerce and Investment also highlighted the importance of increasing trade with Uzbekistan to meet market demands and foster a competitive environment.

Discrepancies in Trade Data

Official institutions from both countries provide varying figures on trade volume. The National Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan reported a trade volume of 1.1 billion dollars with Afghanistan for the first half of 2026, while the Afghan Ministry of Industry and Trade cited a figure of 1.2 billion dollars for the first seven months of the year.

Signing of Agreements and Trade Development

In July of this year, the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan Business Forum took place, attended by traders and investors from both nations, resulting in the signing of 22 trade agreements. In recent meetings, the two countries reiterated their commitment to further trade development, boosting exports, and easing transit processes.

Uzbekistan: A Key Trade Route for Afghanistan

Uzbekistan is recognized as a crucial trade route for Afghanistan towards Central Asia. In recent years, both nations have made considerable efforts to strengthen economic and transit relations. However, the impact of increased trade with Uzbekistan will be more significant if Afghanistan also boosts its exports and reduces reliance on imports.
