According to Kapp’s office, Afghanistan faces a “vicious cycle of conflict” exacerbated by climate change, which serves as a multiplying threat to the region.
The Diplomat of Asia magazine reports, based on information from the Kapp office, that Afghanistan’s global isolation and the Taliban’s governance failures are intensifying concerns that the country’s climate crisis could affect the wider region and beyond.
The organization also highlighted the adverse effects of the Taliban’s return to power, particularly Afghanistan’s exclusion from crucial global climate discussions, including those hosted by the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
The report further notes that Afghanistan is currently able to meet only 40% of its electricity demand, resulting in approximately six-hour daily power shortages at the country’s health centers.
It is crucial to acknowledge that Afghanistan is contending with a severe climate crisis amid ongoing political and economic turmoil.
