In a letter to Congress, the President of the United States announced that he intends to remove the title of “America’s main ally outside of NATO” from Afghanistan.
US President Joe Biden said in a letter to Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives: “According to Section 517 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, I would like to announce that I intend to remove the name of Afghanistan from the list of major US allies outside of NATO.”
In 2012, more than ten years after the deployment of the first group of NATO forces in Afghanistan following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States named Afghanistan as one of the main allies of the United States outside of NATO.
