China’s representative at the UN: Taliban must strengthen northern border security and suppress terrorist groups
Fu Gong, China’s representative at the United Nations, directly called on the Taliban government in a recent UN Security Council meeting to investigate the killing of Chinese residents near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border and to strengthen security measures.
This request follows attacks that took place on November 26 and 30 in the districts of Shamsuddin Shahin and Darwaz in Tajikistan. As a result of these attacks, five Chinese workers were killed, and five others were injured.
The Tajik government had previously announced that these attacks were carried out from Afghan territory. The Chinese representative at the UN also requested that the Taliban government strengthen security measures at the border with Tajikistan.
The Chinese representative also increased pressure on the Taliban to fight against terrorist groups based in Afghanistan and called for active suppression of these groups, including ISIS, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
In response, Amir Khan Muttaqi, the foreign minister of the Taliban government, promised to cooperate with Tajikistan in joint investigations in this area.
Previously, Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesman for the Taliban’s police command in Badakhshan province, stated to Afghan media that two people had been arrested on suspicion of attacking Chinese residents. However, no group has claimed responsibility for these attacks so far, and the results of the investigation have not been officially announced.
