Short Link:
The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that the process of reviewing the removal of the Taliban from the country’s list of terrorist organizations is underway. This move is being carried out under Russia’s new law, which defines the mechanism for suspending the status of terrorist groups.
According to Russian officials, amendments to certain regulations of the Russian Federation were approved in December 2024, and the text is publicly available. This law outlines the process of reviewing and suspending the status of terrorist groups and may also apply to the Taliban.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has emphasized that the review is ongoing, and any final decision will be officially announced.
Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, Russia has maintained cautious diplomatic relations with the group and has kept its embassy in Kabul operational. While many countries have yet to recognize the Taliban, Moscow is one of the few nations that have maintained official interactions with them.
Improved Diplomatic Relations: This move could pave the way for closer ties between Moscow and Kabul.
Strengthening the Taliban’s International Standing: Being removed from the terrorist list could help the Taliban gain global legitimacy.
Increased Economic Cooperation: If this decision is made, Russia may expand its trade and economic cooperation with Afghanistan.
At present, the decision is not final, and Russia is still reviewing it. However, if this process is completed, it could mark a significant shift in Moscow-Kabul relations.
