Russian Foreign Minister Critiques U.S. Military Strategy in Afghanistan

The Russian Foreign Minister criticized the U.S. actions in Afghanistan, stating that instead of focusing on combating terrorism, the country opted to maintain its military presence, resulting in a divergence from the initial objectives of the operation.

Lavrov’s Critique of U.S. Policies in Afghanistan

Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Foreign Minister, during an interview with RBC television, criticized the U.S. performance in Afghanistan. He remarked that Washington chose to continue its military presence in the country instead of concentrating on eradicating terrorism. He referenced the September 11 attacks, stating, “The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution in response to these attacks aimed at combatting terrorism and assisting the Afghan people in returning to normal life.”

Lavrov emphasized that Moscow, despite recognizing the threat of global terrorism, was willing to collaborate with the coalition led by the United States. He recalled the first contact made by Russian President Vladimir Putin with his American counterpart after September 11, indicating that the purpose was to offer assistance to the U.S.

Adverse Outcomes of U.S. Military Presence in Afghanistan

The Russian Foreign Minister further pointed out that the prolonged U.S. presence in Afghanistan has diverged from the initial operation objectives set forth by the Security Council. Over time, Afghanistan became engulfed in security and social challenges stemming from this presence. The September 11, 2001 attacks, carried out by 19 al-Qaeda members, served as a pretext for initiating the war in Afghanistan, with the United States launching extensive airstrikes on October 7, 2001, as part of an international coalition.

The U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan lasted until 2021, leading to numerous developments that significantly impacted the security and social landscape of the country. Lavrov added that this trajectory evidently strayed from the initial goals that were intended.
