Shocking Statistics of Sexual Violations

According to the first official survey conducted on sexual harassment across the British armed forces, nearly one in ten women employed in these institutions has experienced rape or other non-consensual sexual activities over the past year. These statistics indicate the depth of the ethical and behavioral crisis in the British army. According to The Guardian, the UK Ministry of Defence announced that one-third of female personnel reported being subjected to harassment or unwanted touching that caused them distress. Additionally, two-thirds of them reported experiencing at least one type of sexual harassment or behavior. These ratios are significantly higher than their male counterparts in the army, navy, and air force. Louise Sandher-Jones, the human resources minister of the Ministry of Defence, stated clearly after the publication of these results that these statistics are completely unacceptable.

Efforts to Tackle Unacceptable Behavior

Following the publication of this report, immediate actions have been initiated to address unacceptable sexual behavior. Specialized teams will now be deployed at the army training camp in Catterick, North Yorkshire, and at the naval base in Plymouth. Similar plans for other military locations, including the Akrotiri base in Cyprus, are also scheduled for next year. In recent years, the British army has faced a series of scandals involving rape, assault, and sexual harassment. The most notable case was the suicide of Jisli Beck, a 19-year-old soldier, after a former army officer was sentenced to six months in prison last October for sexually assaulting her in July 2021. Beck’s suicide occurred after senior officers failed to investigate this incident properly.

The Statistical Gap Between Women and Men

Overall, 67% of women employed in the armed forces reported experiencing at least one type of sexual harassment or behavior in the past twelve months. This figure, compared to 34% of men who reported similar experiences, indicates a significant gender gap in this area. A total of 8% of female personnel stated that they experienced sexual activities they did not consent to in the past year, while this figure was 1% for men. 32% of women reported being touched in a way that made them feel uncomfortable, while this figure for men was 5%. 42% of women reported being stared at or looked at mockingly, whereas this number was 9% for men. The survey revealed that in 18% of cases, the perpetrators of sexual harassment against women were senior officers.

Efforts to Change the Structure of the Army

Despite the high statistics of sexual harassment, only a small number of female personnel affected by these incidents have filed complaints: 12% have done so formally, and 20% have taken informal routes. Currently, 16,300 women serve in the armed forces, making up 11.9% of the total personnel. The Ministry of Defence has stated its intention to increase the hiring level of new women to 30% by the end of this decade to help eradicate sexual harassment and illegal behaviors, although few experts believe this goal is achievable.
