Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Taliban government, announced the official position of the government in response to recent remarks by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), which called for serious steps by the Taliban to protect Afghan rights.
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, UNAMA stated that human rights are essential and highlighted that many Afghans, particularly women and girls, are still deprived of these rights, urging the Taliban to act in accordance with international commitments. Mujahid, in response to these demands, emphasized that: The rights of all people in Afghanistan, according to him, are guaranteed within the framework of Islamic laws. Implicitly rejecting the acceptance of global human rights standards, he added: Afghans are not obligated to accept the human rights of other societies that have a different definition as their own rights. These statements reflect the Taliban’s insistence on implementing human rights based on their own specific interpretation of Islamic Sharia and clearly challenge the acceptance of international commitments and UNAMA’s demands regarding the rights of women and girls.
