This initiative comes as the Taliban seeks to boost mining operations, especially following the identification of 250 new emerald mines, as a means to offset financial losses from cuts in international aid. However, economic experts have raised concerns about mining practices lacking independent oversight and financial transparency…

New Mine Discoveries and Licensing Efforts

The Taliban’s Ministry of Mines in Panjshir previously reported that, just this past month, 250 new emerald mines had been identified in the Arayeb Valley of the Parian district, along with 10 other mines in various regions of the province. Furthermore, on July 19, the ministry announced that extraction permits had been granted for over 600 mines in Panjshir, indicating a push to maximize the exploitation of the region’s mineral resources.

Concerns About Lack of Transparency

The Taliban’s expansion of mining activities appears to be motivated by the need to recover significantly reduced revenue due to the suspension of international aid. Nevertheless, experts warn that mining practices implemented since the Taliban’s takeover lack the necessary independent oversight, financial accountability, and adherence to environmental standards.
