Unprecedented Reduction in Opium Production<\/h2>\n

Mr. Shaheen highlighted the need for alternative income projects for affected farmers while confirming the United Nations report on the significant reduction in opium production in Afghanistan. The UN report indicates that the total opium production in Afghanistan has decreased to about 296 tons in 2024. As a result of this unprecedented decline, Afghanistan has lost its global number one position in opium production for the first time in several decades, now ranking second after Myanmar.<\/p>\n

Increasing Threat of Synthetic Drugs<\/h2>\n

The head of the Taliban’s office in Qatar also reported on the serious efforts of security forces to closely monitor borders to prevent the trafficking of necessary chemicals for the production of synthetic drugs into Afghanistan. He called on neighboring countries to fulfill their responsibilities in this area and to prevent the entry of precursor materials.<\/p>\n

These statements came in response to a warning from the United Nations regarding the increasing threat of synthetic drugs in Afghanistan. The UN report indicates that as opium cultivation decreases, drug networks in the country are now turning to the production of synthetic drugs like methamphetamine. The amount of seizures of this substance in Afghanistan and neighboring countries increased by 50 percent in late 2024 compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n

Previously, Iranian officials had also warned about the origin of these substances. Hossein Zolfaqari, secretary of Iran’s anti-drug headquarters, stated that precursor chemicals are mainly produced in industrialized countries in Europe and Southeast Asia and are transferred to Afghanistan under the guise of legal industrial materials.
