The United Nations has recently reported that Taliban forces arrested dozens of women and girls in Kabul over three days in July, allegedly for not adhering to hijab regulations. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has condemned these actions as a blatant violation of human rights and a clear case of systemic discrimination against women.

Details of the Arrests

In its report, the UN detailed the arbitrary detention of over sixty Afghan women and girls in Kabul by the Taliban. The detentions occurred between July 16 and 19 of this year, with women held from a few hours up to one night.

Family Commitments for Release

UNAMA further highlighted that the male relatives of these detainees were compelled to sign written commitments for their release. This process reportedly occurred arbitrarily, bypassing any legal protocols.

Increasing Restrictions Since Taliban’s Return

Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban has imposed extensive restrictions on women’s lives, including a ban on working in both governmental and non-governmental sectors, as well as preventing girls from receiving education beyond the sixth grade.

International Community’s Response

While the Taliban claims its regulations are based on Islamic Sharia principles, international human rights organizations, including the United Nations, have characterized these actions as systematic discrimination against Afghan women.

Concerns Over Ongoing Human Rights Violations

UNAMA’s report stresses that the human rights situation in Afghanistan remains highly concerning, with increasing limitations on women and girls posing a serious threat to their future.
