Ariana News Agency-\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a U.N. Economic and Social Council video briefing the original thinking two months ago was that it may take 12 to 18 months for a vaccine. But he said an accelerated effort is under way, helped by 7.4 billion euros ($8 billion) pledged a week ago by leaders from 40 countries, organizations and banks for research, treatment and testing.<\/p>\n He said the $8 billion will not be enough, and additional funds will be needed to speed up the development of a vaccine, but more importantly to produce enough \u201cto make sure that this vaccine reaches everyone \u2014 (and) there\u2019s no one be left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe have good candidates now,\u201d Tedros said. \u201cThe top ones are around seven, eight. But we have more than a hundred candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe are focusing on the few candidates we have which can bring probably better results and accelerating those candidates with better potential,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Tedros did not identify the top candidates.<\/p>\n Since January, he said, \u201cWHO has been working with thousands of researchers all over the world to accelerate and track vaccine development from developing animal models to clinical trial designs and everything in between.\u201d<\/p>\n Tedros said there is also a consortium of more than 400 scientists involved in vaccine development and diagnostics.<\/p>\n The WHO chief stressed that COVID-19 is \u201cvery contagious and it\u2019s a killer,\u201d with over 4 million cases now reported to WHO and almost 275,000 lives lost.<\/p>\n While new cases are declining in Western Europe, they are increasing in Eastern Europe, Africa, southeast Asia, the eastern Mediterranean and other regions, he said.<\/p>\n Tedros said \u201cthe pandemic is teaching us many painful lessons,\u201d especially the importance of having strong national and regional health systems.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd yet on current trends, more than 5 billion people will not access these essential services by 2030\u201d \u2014 the ability to see a health worker, access essential medicine, and have running water in hospitals, he said.<\/p>\n He stressed that as the response to COVID-19 continues, nations must also lay the foundations for a healthy, safer and fairer world.<\/p>\n \u201cThe world spends around $7.5 trillion on health care each year, almost 10 percent of global GDP, but the best investments are in promoting health and in preventing disease at the primary health care level which will save lives and save money,\u201d Tedros said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" The World Health Organization chief said Monday there are around seven or eight \u201ctop\u201d candidates for a vaccine to combat the novel coronavirus and work on them is being accelerated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":5328,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","_mat_hreflang_tags":[],"addvideo":"","video_duration":"","farsit":"","target":"0","top_stories":"0","top":"0"},"categories":[18,15,3],"tags":[732,730,691,739],"class_list":["post-5327","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world-security","category-world-social","category-world","tag-coronavirus-vaccine","tag-covid-19","tag-cronavirus","tag-who"],"acf":{"myctype":"change","target":false,"top_stories":false,"top":false,"farsit":""},"yoast_head":"\n
