On World Animation Day, industry advocates in Afghanistan highlighted the stagnation of the animation sector and the urgent need for financial support and enhancements in educational standards. They emphasized the importance of producing high-quality content that aligns with local culture.

The Stagnation of Afghanistan’s Animation Industry

Today, October 28, coinciding with World Animation Day, animation professionals in Afghanistan reported on the stagnation and weakness of the industry in the country. They stated that serious measures are needed to enhance educational and recreational content for children. While the emergence of artificial intelligence tools has facilitated production, significant challenges still persist in this field.

Quality of Animation Productions is Lacking

Abdullah Fazli, a veteran in the field with over a decade of experience, noted that Afghanistan’s animation industry has only seen a growth of about five to eight percent and that the quality of domestic productions is subpar. He indicated that the few individuals who provide quality work have either trained abroad or produce for the domestic market with foreign backing.

Graphic designer Esfandiar Hosseini echoed these sentiments, stating that current productions are scattered and cannot be compared with global standards.

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Animation

Another active member of the field, Amanullah Iman, mentioned that the history of animation in Afghanistan dates back to 2005 and 2006, and by 2025, the spread of artificial intelligence technology has accelerated access to animation creation tools. However, these changes will not replace the professional skills of artists.

Need for Support and Specialized Training

Fereshteh Salehi, a children’s literature writer, emphasized the impact of visual clips and educational songs and called for financial support and enhanced specialized training in this sector. Mina Zamani, the former editor of the children’s magazine “Tarbiat,” also highlighted that animations aligned with local language and culture are beneficial for facilitating life skills and various subjects. She stressed the importance of parental and educator supervision to prevent the promotion of violence and inappropriate content.

New Opportunities on World Animation Day

Afgani advocates see World Animation Day as an opportune moment to draw attention to the cultural needs of children and to invest in the art of animation within the country. This day was established in 2002 by the International Animated Film Association.
