The Kabul River is facing significant environmental and health risks due to the accumulation of waste and sewage. The Kabul Municipality and the Disaster Preparedness Office are taking necessary actions to clean the river.

Pollution of the Kabul River and Its Consequences

The Kabul River, a vital water source in the country, is grappling with severe environmental and public health issues caused by the buildup of waste and debris. Environmental activists and residents in the surrounding areas stress the urgent need to address this issue.

Causes of Pollution and Negligence

According to community members, the accumulation of garbage and the entry of sewage into the river have led to unpleasant odors, an increase in pests, and the spread of various diseases. The negligence of some individuals, particularly shopkeepers and street vendors, in disposing of their waste and the lack of effective management by the Kabul Municipality are major contributors to the current situation.

Actions by the Kabul Municipality to Improve the Situation

In response to the crisis, officials from the Kabul Municipality have announced that initial assessments to measure damages and plan for the cleanup of the Kabul River have commenced. They have also emphasized the importance of community cooperation in these efforts.

The Need for Funding and International Assistance

The Disaster Preparedness Office has indicated that approximately one million US dollars is required for a comprehensive cleanup of the Kabul River. International organizations and donor countries have been urged to assist in securing this funding to address the pollution problem.

Health Risks Associated with Contaminated Water

Doctors and environmental specialists have warned of the serious health risks posed by the use of polluted water from the river for local residents and visitors. They emphasize the need for immediate actions to safeguard water resources.
