The price per kilogram has plummeted to 4,000 Afghanis, pushing farmers to the brink of bankruptcy.

Price Drop in Asafoetida Leaves Afghan Farmers in Financial Crisis

Farmers cultivating asafoetida in Afghanistan are facing a dire situation due to a drastic decline in prices coupled with rising transit costs. Once promoted as a profitable alternative to opium poppy cultivation, this medicinal plant is now confronted with severe economic challenges.

The prices of asafoetida seeds, seedlings, and resin have dramatically fallen even as transportation costs for exporting the product have surged. Turyali Sakhi Zada, a farmer from Parwan province, has expressed that he is on the verge of total bankruptcy and is having to sell his assets to cover his debts.

Reports indicate that the price of Tajik variety seedlings has dropped from 15 to 18 Afghanis to just 1 to 2 Afghanis. Likewise, the price of asafoetida seeds has plunged from 12,000 Afghanis to around 4,000, while the resin’s price has decreased from 5,000 to approximately 800 to 1,000 Afghanis.

Challenges in Asafoetida Export and Rising Transit Costs

Farmers are also complaining about the increased transit costs. The cost of air transport for each kilogram has surged from 60 cents to nearly 2 dollars. These conditions have diminished the bargaining power of Afghan traders and have led to market saturation in India.

In this context, Misbahuddin Mustaeen, spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture, has acknowledged that the global increase in production is the main reason behind the declining prices. Nonetheless, farmers continue to grapple with rising costs and decreasing demand.

Professor Zekrullah Safi, a former faculty member in agriculture, emphasizes that promoting crops like asafoetida without government support and internal processing cannot serve as a suitable substitute for opium poppy. Farmers like Sakhi Zada face serious challenges in making decisions about the future of their fields as the seed-selling season approaches.

Farmers in Afghanistan are struggling with plummeting prices for asafoetida, a crop once seen as a viable alternative to opium, amid rising transit costs.
