A pregnant woman in Khost province was forced to give birth outdoors after being denied admission to a hospital. This incident sparked severe criticism on social media and highlighted the ongoing crisis regarding women’s access to health services.

Outdoor Birth Sparks Outrage

A pregnant woman in Khost had to give birth in public due to the refusal of the “Doctors Without Borders” hospital to admit her. Images of the incident triggered widespread outrage and served as a stark reminder of the challenges women face in accessing adequate health care.

According to reports and videos circulating online, the woman was left with no choice but to deliver her baby outside after the staff and doctors at the facility turned her away. Details about the health condition of both the mother and the newborn remain unclear, but the event has drawn significant criticism of the management of medical facilities.

Challenges for Women’s Access to Health Services

Analysts argue that strict restrictions placed on women’s education and employment by the Taliban have resulted in a severe shortage of female doctors and midwives in the country. Cultural and religious sensitivities further complicate women’s access to medical examinations and health services.

Prior reports highlighted the exodus of the only female doctor in Paktia province due to prevailing pressures, underscoring the worrying extent of this shortage. Meanwhile, Taliban’s acting Minister of Higher Education, Neda Mohammad Nadeem, has called on countries including Turkey to send medical personnel and specialized professionals. However, experts stress that bringing in foreign specialists cannot substitute for the deprivation of women from education and professional opportunities.

The Urgency for Safe Maternity Services

This incident in Khost has once again emphasized the urgent need for safe maternity services and accountability from healthcare centers. Ignoring the health status of women in Afghanistan poses serious risks to the well-being of mothers and newborns, and it is crucial for relevant authorities to address this issue promptly.
