In a tragic incident involving unexploded ordnance in the Khogyani district of Nangarhar, three children aged between seven and ten lost their lives. The victims, two girls and a boy, were playing with the munitions when the explosion occurred.

Explosion of Unexploded Munitions in Nangarhar

Reliable local sources in eastern Afghanistan report that three children have died as a result of an explosion from unexploded shells in Khogyani district, Nangarhar. This heartbreaking incident took place on Tuesday evening in the “Zawa” area.

According to available information, the children, aged between seven and ten years old, encountered a shell from a mortar while playing and it detonated. This incident highlights the persistent dangers posed by unexploded munitions left over from past conflicts, which still represent a serious threat to civilians, especially children.

Social and Humanitarian Consequences

Reports indicate that unexploded ordnance continues to exist in various parts of Afghanistan, posing a significant risk to human lives, particularly that of children. In many cases, children fall victim due to a lack of awareness about the dangers these materials present.

Social activists and human rights organizations have repeatedly stressed the urgent need for the removal of these hazardous materials and for public awareness campaigns. Ignoring this issue could lead to similar tragedies in the future, threatening the lives of even more individuals.

Ongoing Threats

The continued presence of leftover explosive materials from conflicts evidences that many families in Afghanistan live under the constant threat these materials pose, which has become a grim reality. This situation necessitates serious attention from relevant authorities as well as international cooperation.
