Herbalists in Nangarhar are expressing their concerns over the ongoing smuggling of Pakistani spices, urging for an end to this practice rather than the seizure of their goods.

Claims from Nangarhar Herbalists about Pakistani Spice Smuggling

Herbalists in Nangarhar have voiced their dissatisfaction over the persistent smuggling of Pakistani spices into local markets, calling for an end to this trend instead of their goods being confiscated. They believe that despite the implementation of official restrictions, smuggling has only intensified.

One local herbalist, who requested anonymity, told our reporter: “We don’t have a problem with legal bans, but if imports are prohibited, serious measures should be taken at border points to prevent losses to businesses.”

The Taliban pointed to the ban on importing Pakistani spices last February and directed the Ministry of Finance to prevent the entry of these goods. Nevertheless, herbalists insist that the high demand from the public continues to fuel spice smuggling.

Issues from Confiscation and Poor Quality of Smuggled Spices

Another herbalist reported the confiscation of 50,000 Afghanis worth of his goods due to smuggling, adding that the public has become accustomed to these types of spices. He noted that as long as there is a general need, smugglers will continue their operations.

Health experts in Kabul have warned about the low quality of smuggled items. An internist in the capital emphasized that despite the arrival of products from other countries, the demand for Pakistani spices remains a significant challenge.

Lack of Local Authorities’ Response in Nangarhar

Officials from the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Finance had previously reported on measures to close illegal routes, yet no new actions have been observed from local authorities in Nangarhar or the Ministry of Interior regarding this matter. This is occurring while a lack of self-sufficiency in spice production continues to keep the market reliant on foreign imports.
