Faig: Afghan Women Must Play Active Roles in Political Negotiations<\/h2>\n

On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, diplomats and Afghan civil society figures urged for the effective involvement of women in all political processes and national reconciliation efforts.<\/p>\n

This special meeting, titled “Women, Peace, Justice, and National Reconciliation in Afghanistan,” was held on Monday (September 30). Nasir Ahmad Faig, the acting head of Afghanistan’s permanent mission to the UN, stated that after five years of Taliban rule, the establishment of stability and reconciliation processes appears unrealistic without justice and accountability.<\/p>\n

Faig also stressed that ignoring half of the population would negatively impact political processes, highlighting that the genuine participation of women should exceed mere symbolic appearances.<\/p>\n

Call for a Global Shift in Perspective<\/h2>\n

Adila Raz, a former diplomat and member of the UN Advisory Committee, underscored the importance of changing the global perspective on Afghan women, reminding attendees not to view them solely as victims.<\/p>\n

She noted that despite serious challenges, women continue to play leadership roles, engage in political activities, and promote peace in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Challenges Facing Afghan Women<\/h2>\n

These comments come amid reports that the Taliban, despite claims of upholding citizens’ rights under Sharia law, have intensified restrictions on women\u2019s work, education, and access to healthcare. This issue has been clearly outlined in reports by Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur.<\/p>\n

Additionally, while Russia recognized the Taliban’s interim government in the summer of 2023 as the first UN member state to do so, other countries have refrained from establishing formal relations with the regime.
