Afghan Women Embrace Online Trade Amid Taliban Challenges<\/h2>\n

Following the imposition of extensive restrictions by the Taliban on women’s work and social engagement, a number of Afghan women have turned to online commerce<\/a>. Their ventures include selling handicrafts, traditional clothing, and jewelry via social media platforms to reach customers.<\/p>\n

For several Afghan women, online trading has become a means to market their goods, allowing them to continue their economic activities from home. Shakila Ebrahimi, a recent computer science graduate, began her journey with just 500 Afghanis, creating handmade bags, and now earns up to 70,000 Afghanis a month. She stated, “Our main challenge is receiving payments from foreign customers. Additionally, the restrictions hinder our business expansion.”<\/p>\n

Online Commerce: A Path to Economic Independence<\/h2>\n

Narges, another woman entrepreneur, started her business with 40,000 Afghanis from a small room. Through crafting traditional jewelry and bags, she has achieved economic independence. Narges remarked, “We couldn\u2019t work outside of our homes, so I found online trade to be an opportunity to work from home. This isn\u2019t just about the current circumstances; it can be a viable option for independence in the long run.”<\/p>\n

Challenges and Barriers Facing Women Entrepreneurs<\/h2>\n

Economic experts view online commerce as a growth opportunity, but they point to challenges such as infrastructural limitations. Mohammad Bashir Doodial noted, “In other countries, barriers to women\u2019s employment do not exist, and overcoming this can contribute to Afghanistan’s economic development.” According to the International Labour Organization, women’s participation in Afghanistan’s workforce has plummeted to 5.1 percent, attributed to existing employment restrictions on women.<\/p>\n

Before the Taliban regained power, approximately 2,471 women-owned businesses operated in Afghanistan, providing job opportunities for over 130,000 individuals. However, with the current Taliban restrictions, many women are now deprived of numerous career opportunities.
