Afghan Widows Struggling for Survival and Income<\/h2>\n

The lack of job opportunities and income has put many widowed women in Afghanistan in a precarious situation. After losing their husbands, they bear the sole responsibility for providing for their families and securing their children’s future, but restrictive work conditions make this task even more daunting.<\/p>\n

Simin, a widow and mother of three, shares her struggles following the death of her husband, a national army soldier. He lost his life two years ago during a conflict with the Taliban, and now she is grappling with numerous challenges. Simin expresses her frustrations about not receiving aid from relevant organizations, stating, “When my husband was alive, I wish I hadn’t lost my job.”<\/p>\n

Economic Challenges and Unemployment<\/h2>\n

Other widows are experiencing similar hardships. One woman and mother of four from Parwan province states, “The difficulties are immense. If we have something to eat in the morning, we wonder what we will have for dinner.” She used to work for a non-governmental organization but is currently appealing to aid agencies for support for herself and other widowed women.<\/p>\n

Another woman, who lost her husband four years ago while attempting illegal migration to Iran, explains that her children have been unable to attend school due to financial constraints. She adds, “If only I could find even a small source of income, I could manage my life better.”<\/p>\n

Desperate Conditions for Female Heads of Household<\/h2>\n

According to reports, the Taliban’s Ministry of Martyrs and Disabled has registered over 395,000 orphans and 98,000 widows in Afghanistan. Despite this, many of these women complain about the lack of assistance. Some international organizations report that 11 million women and girls in Afghanistan are in urgent need of aid.<\/p>\n

The International Labour Organization has noted a decrease in women’s participation in the workforce to just 5.1 percent, identifying Afghanistan as the country with the second-lowest rate of female workforce participation globally.
