India and Afghanistan Reach Agreement to Strengthen Trade Relations<\/h2>\n

The joint working group on trade from India and Afghanistan held an online session aimed at facilitating trade and customs collaboration. The Indian Ministry of Commerce announced on Wednesday (September 11) that representatives from both nations reached an agreement on new steps to strengthen bilateral economic relations.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, various components were addressed, including easing visa processes for Afghan traders, financial and banking cooperation, trade in spices and agricultural products, energy, investments, transport, and port-related issues. Both countries decided that discussions on expanding investment and trade relations would continue.<\/p>\n

Afghanistan’s Demand for Indian Products<\/h2>\n

Azarakhsh Hafizi, the former president of the ECO Chamber of Commerce, stated, “India is the largest buyer of Afghanistan’s agricultural and handicraft products and does not need advertising. The people of India have been familiar with Afghan produce for a long time. A permanent cooperation committee has been established to address issues.”<\/p>\n

He highlighted that the shortest trade route from Afghanistan to India passes through Pakistan and expressed hope that regional issues will be resolved, and transportation routes will be opened. Hafizi also underscored Afghanistan’s urgent need for Indian technology and industrial products.<\/p>\n

Trade Challenges Due to Closed Borders<\/h2>\n

While reports indicate efforts to facilitate trade relations between India and Afghanistan under Taliban rule, the political and security relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan remains tense. For over ten months, all border crossings between these two countries have been closed, causing Afghan traders billions of dollars in losses.<\/p>\n

Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi, vice president of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries, recently announced in Peshawar that Pakistan’s annual exports to Afghanistan reach about 1.5 billion dollars, while Afghanistan’s exports to this market have completely halted at approximately 800 million dollars due to the blockade.<\/p>\n
