India and Afghanistan Reach Agreement to Strengthen Trade Relations<\/h2>\n

The joint working group on trade<\/a> between India and Afghanistan convened online to discuss enhancing trade and customs collaboration. On Wednesday (September 2), the Indian Ministry of Commerce announced that commercial representatives from both countries reached an agreement on new steps to bolster their bilateral economic relationship.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, multiple components were discussed, including easing visa processes for Afghan traders, financial and banking cooperation, trade in spices and agricultural products, energy, investment, transportation, and port-related issues. Both countries agreed to continue discussions on expanding investment and trade relations.<\/p>\n

Afghanistan’s Need for Indian Products<\/h2>\n

Azarakhsh Hafezi, former president of the ECO Chamber of Commerce, stated, “India is the largest buyer of Afghan agricultural products and handicrafts, which speaks for itself. The people of India have been familiar with Afghan goods for a long time. To address challenges, a permanent cooperation committee has been established.”<\/p>\n

He emphasized that the shortest trade route from Afghanistan to India passes through Pakistan and expressed hope that regional issues would be resolved and transportation routes opened. Hafezi also underscored Afghanistan’s significant need for Indian technology and industrial products.<\/p>\n

Trade Challenges Due to Border Closures<\/h2>\n

Despite reports of attempts to facilitate trade relations between India and Afghanistan under Taliban rule, political and security dynamics between Afghanistan and Pakistan remain strained. All border crossings between these two countries have been closed for over ten months, causing billions of dollars in losses to Afghan traders.<\/p>\n

Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi, deputy head of the Afghanistan-Pakistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, recently announced in Peshawar that Pakistan’s annual exports to Afghanistan amount to approximately $1.5 billion, while Afghanistan’s exports to this market have dropped to around $800 million, completely halted due to closed routes.<\/p>\n
