The lack of jobs and dwindling income has presented serious challenges for Afghan families. Shafiqullah, a disabled man from Nangarhar, has resorted to borrowing from shopkeepers to feed his family of 13 due to unemployment<\/a> and insufficient income. He states, “I borrow money from shopkeepers to buy flour or rice, but many of them can no longer lend me anything.”<\/p>\n

This situation extends beyond Shafiqullah; the Taliban’s Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs has reported that the unemployment rate has reached 30%, a significant increase from about 12% noted by the World Bank in 2021. Gul Muhammad, a daily laborer in Kabul, also addresses the economic difficulties and scarcity of job opportunities, saying he relies on borrowing to sustain his life.<\/p>\n

Alexander De Croo, President of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), stated on July 6, 2023, that three out of four people in Afghanistan are unable to meet their basic needs.
