Habibullah Alizai, who previously served as the head of the Strategic Command of the Afghan National Army, expressed in an interview with CBS that there were no security plans for Kabul at the Ministry of Defense in the last days of the Republic. He highlighted the increasing advances of the Taliban and noted that under such circumstances, then-President Ashraf Ghani appointed him as the head of Strategic Command. Alizai mentioned that just four days after taking office, Ghani requested him to draft a defense plan for Kabul, despite believing that such a plan should have been in place beforehand.<\/p>\n

Alizai recalled that in mid-June 2021, two months before the fall of the capital, he had prepared a plan to confront the Taliban and submitted it to the Ministry of Defense. According to the former head of Strategic Command, Afghan forces had options to counter the Taliban at that time, but the rapid pace of events was not in their favor.<\/p>\n

Alizai also dismissed claims that Afghan forces collapsed without resistance, emphasizing that troops were fighting in various regions of the country, including around Kabul and Helmand province. Following Ashraf Ghani’s flight from the country, Alizai believed there was still an opportunity for resistance as Afghan forces were present in various parts of Kabul and other provinces.
