{"id":1270,"date":"2018-12-15T13:35:28","date_gmt":"2018-12-15T09:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ariananews.co\/en\/?p=1270"},"modified":"2018-12-15T13:35:28","modified_gmt":"2018-12-15T09:05:28","slug":"pompeo-intervenes-to-release-two-canadians-held-in-china-after-huawei-executives-arrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ariananews.co\/en\/asia\/pompeo-intervenes-to-release-two-canadians-held-in-china-after-huawei-executives-arrest\/","title":{"rendered":"Pompeo Intervenes to Release two Canadians held in China after Huawei executive&#8217;s arrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has said China should free two Canadian citizens who were detained this week following the arrest in Canada of a senior Huawei executive on a US extradition warrant.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ariana News Agency-\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Pompeo\u2019s comments were the first by a senior US official on the Canadians\u2019 arrests, which the country\u2019s prime minister Justin Trudeau said could escalate a growing trade conflict between China and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unlawful detention of two Canadian citizens is unacceptable,\u201d Pompeo told reporters after talks in Washington with Canadian foreign minister Chrystia Freeland. \u201cThey ought to be returned &#8230; We ask all nations of the world to treat other citizens properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China detained the two \u2013 businessman Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat and an adviser with the International Crisis Group (ICG) \u2013 after Canadian police arrested Huawei Technologies Co Ltd\u2019s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, on 1 December.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s foreign ministry said its ambassador to Beijing, John McCallum, was granted consular access to Kovrig and is pressing for access to Spavor. Trudeau predicted that access would take place \u201cshortly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are being absolutely clear on standing up for our citizens who have been detained, trying to figure out why, trying to work with China to demonstrate that this not acceptable,\u201d he told City Tv in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>ICG President Robert Malley also called for Kovrig\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael\u2019s arrest is unjust.
