Abdullah Sarhadi, the former Taliban governor of Bamiyan, has confessed to personally destroying the giant Buddha statues in Bamiyan in 2001, justifying his actions as adhering to ‘God’s law’ and expressing no regret.

Abdullah Sarhadi’s Confession to the Destruction of Buddha Statues

Abdullah Sarhadi, the former Taliban governor of Bamiyan, confirmed in an interview with the BBC that he played a direct role in the destruction of the monumental Buddha statues located there, stating that he carried out the act himself in 2001.

At the time of the statues’ destruction, Sarhadi was also serving as a military commander for the Taliban. Initially reluctant to answer questions regarding his actions, he eventually took full responsibility, saying, “I destroyed it with my own hands.”

Sarhadi’s Justifications for Historical Destruction

The former Taliban governor has justified the demolition of the Buddha statues by claiming it was in accordance with what he refers to as ‘God’s guidance and law.’ He further stated that the Taliban do not sell idols but break them; therefore, he feels no remorse for the act.

The large Buddha statues in Bamiyan were destroyed in March 2001 on the orders of the Taliban leadership. This act sparked widespread international condemnation and is regarded as one of the most significant instances of cultural heritage destruction in Afghanistan.

Consequences of Cultural Heritage Destruction

The destruction of the Buddha statues is not only recorded as a negative turning point in the history of Afghanistan but also continues to impact the country’s global image adversely. It raised numerous concerns regarding the preservation of cultural heritage in Afghanistan.
